"I Need to Think About It" — The Response That Works 80% of the Time
# "I Need to Think About It" — The Response That Works 80% of the Time
By Champion Sales Training & Events | July 2026
Every car salesperson hears this daily. Most respond with "Okay, take your time" — and the deal dies.
Here's the response I teach that turns this objection into a conversation:
"I completely understand — this is a big decision. What specifically would you like to think through?"
Then stop talking. Let them answer.
What happens next: 80% of the time, they reveal the real objection. "The monthly payment is a little higher than I expected." Or "I want to compare it to the Honda." Or "My wife needs to see it."
Now you have something to work with — instead of a vague "I need to think" that goes nowhere.
The psychology: "I need to think about it" is rarely about thinking. It's a polite way of saying "I have an unstated concern." Your job is to surface it — respectfully — so you can address it.
This is one of dozens of objection-handling techniques in our training platform.
The Framework Behind the Response
This technique works because it follows a simple psychological principle: people want to feel understood before they'll share their real concerns. By validating their need to think while gently probing, you create safety — and the real objection comes out naturally.
Our objection-handling module covers this and dozens more situations, with interactive drills so you can practice until the responses feel natural.
