The Car Sales Follow-Up That Actually Works: A 30-Day Plan

# The Car Sales Follow-Up That Actually Works: A 30-Day Plan

By Champion Sales Training & Events | August 2026

Most car sales follow-up dies after two attempts. One call, one email, maybe a text — then silence. Meanwhile, the customer is still shopping, still considering, and eventually buying from someone else who stayed in touch.

Here's a complete 30-day follow-up plan that you can use starting today.

Day 1: The Immediate Thank-You

Within two hours of the customer leaving the dealership, send a text message.

**Template:** "Hi [Name], thanks for coming in today. It was great meeting you. I'll send over a quick summary of what we discussed in the morning. — [Your Name] at [Dealership]"

Why text first? It's immediate, personal, and doesn't feel like a sales tactic. It's just a thank-you. But it also reminds them who you are and opens the door for a response.

Day 2: The Value Email

Send an email that's helpful, not pushy. Include:

  • A link to the vehicle they were most interested in
  • One similar vehicle for comparison
  • Approximate payment range (if you discussed numbers)
  • A question: "Does Tuesday afternoon work for a follow-up test drive?"

Don't blast them with a wall of text. Three short paragraphs max. Make it scannable.

Day 3: The First Phone Call

This is a check-in call, not a closing call. Reference the email you sent yesterday. Ask if they have questions. If they don't answer, leave a brief voicemail.

**Script:** "Hi [Name], Mike from [Dealership]. I sent over some info on the RAV4 yesterday — just wanted to make sure it came through and see if you had any questions. Give me a call back at your convenience."

Day 5: The Mid-Week Text

Short, simple, no ask.

**Template:** "Hey [Name], hope your week is going well. Let me know if anything comes up that I can help with."

This isn't a sales message. It's a relationship message. It keeps you top of mind without any pressure.

Day 7: The One-Week Email

A week after the visit, send another email with fresh information — a new incentive, a similar vehicle that just arrived, or a helpful article about the model they're considering.

The key is that every follow-up should provide value. If you're just saying "checking in" with nothing new, you're being annoying. If you're providing useful information, you're being helpful.

Day 10: Phone Call #2

More direct this time. Ask if they've made a decision or narrowed things down. If they're still undecided, ask what's holding them up — and really listen to the answer.

Day 14: The Two-Week Email

Subject line: "Still thinking about the [Model]?"

Body: "Hi [Name], it's been two weeks since you came by. I know these decisions take time. If you'd like to come back for another look — maybe bring your spouse this time — I'm happy to set that up. If you've decided to go in a different direction, no worries at all. Just let me know either way."

This email gives them an easy out. If they're not interested, they'll usually tell you — and you can stop investing time. If they are interested, the mention of bringing a spouse often moves the deal forward.

Day 21: The "No Strings" Check-In

Another short text. No vehicle talk — just a friendly message.

**Template:** "Hey [Name], hope you and the family are doing well. Let me know if there's ever anything I can help with, car-related or not."

Day 28: The Final Follow-Up

One last phone call. Keep it brief and gracious.

**Script:** "Hi [Name], just wanted to touch base one more time. If you're still considering the [Model], I'd love to help. If the timing isn't right, I completely understand. Either way, it was a pleasure meeting you."

The Golden Rules of Follow-Up

  • **Never follow up without a reason.** Every message should have a purpose.
  • **Vary your channels.** Text, email, phone — use all three.
  • **Respect the silence.** If they're not responding, slow down. Don't accelerate.
  • **Know when to stop.** After 30 days of no response, move them to a quarterly nurture sequence.

The Bottom Line

The sale doesn't end when they walk out the door — it's just beginning. A systematic 30-day follow-up plan keeps you in front of customers until they're ready to make a decision. And more often than not, they'll make it with you.
