The 5 Questions Every Salesperson Should Ask Before Showing a Car
# The 5 Questions Every Salesperson Should Ask Before Showing a Car
By Champion Sales Training & Events | July 2026
When I onboard new salespeople, I give them a rule: don't show a single vehicle until you've asked these 5 questions.
- "What's most important to you in your next vehicle?"
- "How will you primarily use it?"
- "Who else will be driving or riding in it?"
- "What are you driving now, and what do you like/not like about it?"
- "What's your timeline for making a decision?"
These questions do three things:
- They show the customer you're actually listening (rare in car sales)
- They reveal exactly which vehicles to present — and which to skip
- They surface objections early, when you can address them
I've seen new reps with zero experience use these 5 questions and outsell 10-year veterans within a month. The veteran was guessing. The rookie was following a process.
It's Step 2 of the 10-step system. Skip it and you're guessing blind.
Why Needs Assessment Changes Everything
The single biggest difference between a 12% closer and a 25% closer? Needs assessment. When you understand the customer's real priorities — not what you assume they are — you stop wasting time on vehicles that don't fit and start presenting only the ones that do.
The result: shorter sales cycles, higher close rates, happier customers, and more referrals.
