Car Sales Script: The Exact Words Top Salespeople Use

# Car Sales Script: The Exact Words Top Salespeople Use

By Champion Sales Training & Events | August 2026

Scripts get a bad reputation. People imagine a pushy salesperson reading from a clipboard. But the reality is that top performers use scripts every day — not because they're robotic, but because they've practiced and refined what works. A good script is a framework, not a straitjacket.

Here are word-for-word scripts for the critical moments in every car sale.

The Greeting Script

The first 15 seconds set the tone. Rushed and transactional kills trust. Warm and curious builds it.

**Say:** "Welcome to [Dealership Name]. I'm [Your Name]. What brings you in today?"

That's it. No "Can I help you?" No "Looking for anything specific?" Just an open-ended question that lets them tell you why they're there.

**Why it works:** It puts the customer in control. They get to explain their situation, and you get critical information without any pressure.

The Needs Assessment Script

Before showing any car, you need to understand what matters to them.

**Say:** "To make sure I show you the right vehicle and don't waste your time, let me ask a few quick questions. What are you driving now, and what do you like about it — and what would you change?"

Then follow with: "What's most important to you in your next vehicle — is it fuel economy, space, technology, or something else?"

**Why it works:** You're positioning yourself as a consultant, not a salesperson. You're gathering intel that will make the presentation more effective.

The Transition to Test Drive Script

Getting the customer behind the wheel is the single most important moment in the sale.

**Say:** "The best way to see if this is the right vehicle for you is to drive it. It'll take about 15 minutes. I'll pull it up front while you grab anything you need from your car."

**Why it works:** It's assumptive and low-pressure. You're not asking "would you like to drive it?" — you're assuming they would, because why wouldn't they? You're also giving them a specific, short time commitment.

The Price Objection Script

When a customer says the price is too high, don't get defensive.

**Say:** "I understand — most people feel that way when they first see the numbers. Can I ask, what price range were you hoping to stay within? That way I can make sure we're looking at options that make sense for you."

**Why it works:** You validate their concern, then pivot to problem-solving. You're not arguing about price — you're working with them to find the right fit.

The "I Need to Think About It" Script

This objection often means they have an unspoken concern.

**Say:** "That makes sense — this is a big decision. Can I ask, is there anything specific you're unsure about? I want to make sure you have all the information you need, whether you decide today or next week."

**Why it works:** You're giving them space while gently surfacing the real objection. Most "I need to think about it" responses hide a concern about price, the vehicle, or the timing. By asking directly, you can address it.

The Follow-Up Call Script

Most salespeople never follow up effectively. Here's what to say when you call a customer who visited but didn't buy.

**Say:** "Hi [Name], this is [Your Name] from [Dealership]. I was thinking about our conversation yesterday and wanted to check in. Have you had any more thoughts about the [Model]?"

Pause. Let them talk.

If they're still undecided: "Totally understand. Is there anything I can clarify or any other vehicle you'd like to look at?"

**Why it works:** You're not pressuring. You're being helpful. And you're staying top of mind — most customers buy from the salesperson who follows up consistently.

The Bottom Line

Scripts aren't about being fake. They're about being prepared. When you know what to say at every stage of the sale, you can focus on what really matters: listening to your customer and solving their problem.
